The case for one-handed controls on mobile
The best mobile games understand that you're often holding a phone in one hand while gripping a rail with the other. The worst ones scatter important buttons into the top corners you literally cannot reach.
Good one-handed design keeps action buttons in the lower third of the screen, near a natural thumb arc. Context-sensitive buttons — one button that changes what it does — are a great way to cut clutter without losing options.
Adjustable button layouts are gold. When a game lets me drag controls to where my thumb actually rests, I play it more and enjoy it longer. Ashvale Chronicle does this well; a lot of racers do not.
If you're a developer reading this: put the pause and menu buttons somewhere reachable too. Nothing ruins a commute like fumbling for a tiny gear icon at the top of the screen.
